Cyborg Opens As Heavy Favorite Over ‘Lioness’
As a potential featherweight superfight between UFC champions Cris Cyborg and Amanda Nunes continues to heat up, oddsmakers have begun to throw their hats into the cage.
According to recent odds released by Bovada, Cyborg has opened as a -300 favorite to take care of the current UFC women’s bantamweight champion, while Nunes comes in at +230 to upset the greatest female fighter in mixed martial arts (MMA) history.
Do those odds come as a surprise? If they do, they probably shouldn’t.
Cyborg, 33, hasn’t lost a single fight since her professional debut over 13 years ago. That streak includes three stops at prominent MMA promotions (UFC, Invicta FC, and Strikeforce) and three world titles. The menacing Brazilian has decimated each and every opponent UFC has thrown her way since making her long-awaited debut in 2016, which is evident by her 5-0 record and four dominant finishes.
Nunes, on the other hand, has had prolonged success at 135 pounds, but nothing in the same stratosphere as Cyborg. The 30-year-old Brazilian has won seven-straight at bantamweight, including finishes over Ronda Rousey, Miesha Tate, Sara McMann, and most recently Raquel Pennington, and has quickly become one of the most feared strikers in the game today.
That said, Nunes is going to have to deliver a performance for the ages later this year if she wishes to dethrone Cyborg as the best in the game. Her fighting style doesn’t necessarily matchup well with Cyborg, which is probably why she’s already a heavy underdog.
What say you Maniacs? Do these preliminary odds ring true?
