Chavez-Angulo added to Dec. 1 SHO bill

Chavez-Angulo added to Dec. 1 SHO bill

Junior’s got his comeback fight.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr won’t be rematching Sergio Martinez, at least not yet, but the Mexican star has his comeback fight set, as he’ll take on veteran Alfredo Angulo on Dec. 1 in Los Angeles, part of the Wilder-Fury card.

Chavez-Angulo won’t air as part of the Wilder-Fury pay-per-view, however. It will be part of a split site Showtime doubleheader before the pay-per-view, airing alongside the Stevenson-Gvozdyk light heavyweight title bout from Quebec.

Chavez (50-3-1, 32 KO) hasn’t been seen since a frankly embarrassing performance in defeat to Canelo Alvarez on Cinco De Mayo weekend in 2017. The 32-year-old’s star power took a big hit with that outing, as he didn’t even produce any fireworks — he didn’t produce anything at all, in fact — in the loss. He was essentially a zombie punching bag for a 12-round Alvarez shutout.

Chavez will face Angulo in a 10-round super middleweight bout.

“I am excited to be back on December 1 to perform for the great Mexican fans in Los Angeles,” said Chavez Jr. “At my weight I know I can beat anyone. I am focused and feel strong. Angulo will be first, but then I will pursue a belt at 168. I’m putting the division on notice. Chavez is back.”

Angulo (24-7, 20 KO) is a pretty faded fighter, 36 years old and loser of his last two and five of his last seven. But he always gives effort and has been a fan favorite throughout his career.

“I have been training very hard in anticipation of this fight and this is the best I have felt in a long time,” said Angulo. “I am looking forward to defeating Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and getting a title opportunity in the near future. I’m thankful for everyone who has supported me and I promise to surprise a lot of people on December 1.”
