DeGale unsure of career after Eubank fight

DeGale unsure of career after Eubank fight

The former titleholder says retirement is an option.

Former super middleweight titleholder James DeGale is set to face Chris Eubank Jr on Feb. 23 in London, but beyond that, he’s not sure of anything with his boxing career.

The 33-year-old DeGale says there’s a chance he could retire after this fight:

“I’m going to get this good win. After this good win I’ll maybe knock it on the head. I don’t know. I could go on to have another three or four fights; I’m not too sure. I’m in a good position where I’m happy and content in what I’ve done with my career. I’ve left my mark. I’m sitting nice. I’ve always said I’m taking every fight as it comes.”

DeGale (25-2-1, 15 KO) has had a strong career. It has been perhaps a bit short of expectations when he turned pro, given he was a gold medal winner at the 2008 Olympics, and the hype for him was high. But he’s won a world title and in terms of checking boxes, he’s probably about as close to complete as he’s going to get.

Eubank (27-2, 21 KO) is a formidable challenge, and style-wise could be a real problem for DeGale, but the same could be said the other way. It’s an intriguing matchup on paper.

As for the talk of retirement, that would usually lead one to speculate that DeGale may not be focused, but for what it’s worth he says he’s mentally and physically prepared for the fight.
