Martin gets DQ win over Corbin

Charles Martin got things started in Texas with a win awarded to him for having his groin punched a lot.

Former heavyweight titleholder Charles Martin picked up a win tonight at AT&T Stadium, but probably not in the manner that he was hoping.

Martin won his fight against local club fighter Gregory Corbin by disqualification in the eighth round, after Corbin had been repeatedly penalized for low blows throughout the bout.

Martin (26-2-1, 23 KO) won every round of the fight without any question, as Corbin (15-1, 9 KO) was completely overmatched and really had no business in the ring with Martin.

The 38-year-old Corbin was hurt in the second and third rounds, but to give him at least a little credit, he showed he can take a punch in this fight. But he also showed no ability to pull the trigger against a superior fighter, and never looked competitive.

By the fourth round, the groin punches had started flowing from the underdog. He lost a point in the fourth for a low blow, then another in the fifth, then another in the sixth, until finally referee Mark Calo-oy saw enough and disqualified him for yet another low shot, 53 seconds into the eighth round.

Martin also suffered a pretty nasty cut outside of his eye in the fourth round due to a clash of heads, so he took some punishment in this one, just not of the “from legal punches” variety.

CompuBox saw Martin land 108 of 369 (29%) total punches, and 90 of 203 (44%) of his power shots. Corbin landed a feeble 26 of 218 (12%) total punches, and 25 of 182 (14%) power punches.
