Arreola crushes Augustin in three

Heavyweight Chris Arreola didn’t waste time on the Spence-Garcia undercard.

Heavyweight Chris Arreola, embarking on a comeback at age 38, picked up a pretty easy win tonight at AT&T Stadium, blasting out previously unbeaten but untested Jean Pierre Augustin in the third round.

Arreola (38-5-1, 33 KO) was clearly the better fighter in this one, as he was able to rather easily push Augustin (17-1-1, 12 KO) back at will in the first couple of rounds, resulting in some theatrics from Augustin.

Early in the third, Arreola caused Augustin to do a bit of the old chicken dance off of a jab. Not long after, Arreola put Augustin down on a flurry of punches.

Augustin got up at the count of nine, and the referee gave him plenty of time to prove he was still mentally alert, which also gave Augustin time to recover as much as he could. It didn’t amount to much, as Arreola stormed in, throwing punches in bunches, and referee Neal Young stepped in to stop it at 2:03 of the third round.

Arreola has had his shots at world titles in the past, and he came up short in 2009 against Vitali Klitschko and in 2014 against Bermane Stiverne. But he says this run is it — he’s going after belts, but if he loses, he’s going to retire.

“I’m not only fighting to win, I’m fighting to look good,” Arreola said. “He came out here to make a name for himself using me, and it wasn’t going to happen. I’m still a heavyweight to be reckoned with. I’m title chasing, not check chasing. If I lose, I’m out.”

According to CompuBox, Arreola landed 44 of 119 (37%) of his total punches, and 27 of 55 (49%) power shots. Augustin landed 29 of 162 (18%) total punches, and 20 of 119 (17%) power shots.
