Kovalev-Yarde reportedly set for August 24th in Russia

The fight was originally planned for June 29th

Take two.

The on-againoff-again WBO light heavyweight bout between champion Sergey Kovalev and mandatory challenger Anthony Yarde appears to be, well, on again. The two recently delayed and ultimately avoided a purse bid, and now Kovalev co-promoter Bob Arum tells The Athletic that the fight is set for August 24th in Russia.

The fresh new wrench in the gears is Canelo Alvarez (52-1-2, 35 KO), who is reportedly gunning for a crack at the “Krusher” in September. According to Arum, a deal is in place for Yarde (18-0, 17 KO) to fight Gilberto Ramirez (40-0, 26 KO) in a final eliminator eliminator and receive step-aside money if Kovalev (33-3-1, 28 KO) vs. Canelo winds up materializing.

One would hope that Canelo makes his decision sooner rather than later so Kovalev can know whether to train for a 5’9” boxer-puncher or a 6’0” slugger.

Honestly, I’d rather see Ramirez-Yarde than Kovalev-Yarde. Ramirez’s résumé outstrips Yarde’s to the point of nearly lapping it, but his only experience at 175 came against Tommy Karpency, and if nothing else, Yarde can certainly deliver a heavier punch than any Zurdo’s faced before.
