Omar Figueroa Jr was just no competition for Yordenis Ugas tonight.

Welterweight contender Yordenis Ugas dominated Omar Figueroa Jr over 12 rounds tonight in Las Vegas in their WBC 147-pound eliminator.

Our live coverage for Pacquiao vs Thurman continues here!

Ugas (24-4, 11 KO) put Figueroa down in the first round, knocking him back hard against the ropes, which referee Russell Mora rightly counted. Figueroa (28-1-1, 19 KO) is a former lightweight titleholder and known as a very tough, very aggressive fighter, but he had nothing for Ugas in this one, losing every round.

Official scores were 119-107 across the board, with Ugas only losing a point to a holding penalty in the fifth round. Bad Left Hook also had it 119-107 for Ugas on two separate cards.

The 33-year-old Ugas won’t get his title shot this year, as WBC titleholder Shawn Porter — who narrowly and controversially beat Ugas in March — is lined up for a Sept. 28 unification fight with Errol Spence Jr. But the Cuban should get it next year at some point, barring a loss in a stay-busy fight between now and then.

For the 29-year-old Figueroa, it’s a tough first pro loss, one where he tried but couldn’t do anything with a naturally bigger, stronger, and more skilled opponent. Figueroa also reportedly trained himself for this fight, which really never works out, especially at this level of competition.

Figueroa will probably have to figure out what he really wants to do with his boxing career going forward. He’s been the subject of a lot of talk over the years regarding him never truly taking his career all that seriously, so a loss like this was perhaps inevitable.
