Lara says it’s been hard getting big names to come to the table but still looking to put on a show.

WBA super welterweight titleholder Erislandy Lara (26-3-3, 15 KOs) may not be up against the kind of big name you’d probably like to see when he faces Greg Vendetti (22-3-1, 12 KOs) this weekend, but Lara tells RingTV that he’s got to take care of business in this fight before moving on to bigger and better things — in part, because it’s been so difficult for him to secure a marquee opponent.

“My job is to fight whoever they put in front of me regardless of whether he has a notable name or not,” said the gifted southpaw. “Right now it’s very difficult to get any of the top guys in the ring with me because they have too many [financial] expectations. I’m going to focus on Vendetti and move on from there.”

From there Lara says he’s looking to land a unification fight against the winner of Jermell Charlo and Jeison Rosario, specifically saying he wants to unify all major titles in order to enhance his legacy.

For this fight Lara is back with trainer Ismael Salas, where he says he’s been working on fine tuning his fundamentals so that he can put on a show in this particular outing, hoping to deliver a bit more action that we might be accustomed to from him.

“I think it’s very important to look good in this fight,” admitted Lara. “As I’m getting older, I’ve been working on my inside game a lot. Fans will see me engage more.”

Lara, 37, most recently comes off a knockout win over Ramon Alvarez this time, last year. His opponent, Vendetti, 30, has won two decisions against fairly low opposition since getting stopped by Michel Soro at the end of 2018.
