Alvarez has been fighting professionally for 15 years

With less than two weeks to go until his scheduled clash with WBC mandatory super middleweight challenger Avni Yildirim, Canelo Alvarez sat down with TUDN to discuss his current and future plans.

First off, despite a brief sojourn to light heavyweight to maul Sergey Kovalev in 2019, Alvarez (54-1-2, 36 KO) has no intention of returning to 175 pounds in 2021 and “possibly” not even in 2022, as trainer Eddy Reynoso believes that he “gives up lots of advantages” at the weight. For now, he and his team are “focused” on winning titles at super middleweight; he has a tentative date with Billy Joe Saunders on May 8th and IBF champion Caleb Plant surely can’t be far behind.

As far as his longevity in the ring, the 30-year-old intends to fight for “six or seven” more years. Alvarez debuted professionally in 2005 at the age of 15, so a 21-22 year career sounds more than feasible.

For now, though, there’s an unheralded Turk and an unpleasant Englishman to deal with.
